LeishGenR™ is now available to veterinarians across Europe

Leishmania 18 January 2026

1 in 4 sick dogs in our studies carry drug-resistance markers; LeishGenR™ detects them directly in clinical samples

Canine leishmaniosis treatment can fail when the parasite carries drug-resistance markers that standard diagnosis does not detect. LeishGenR™ was developed to close that gap and help veterinarians choose the right treatment from the start.

LeishGenR™ is now in routine use through two licensed reference laboratories. UranoVet offers the test in Spain and Portugal, and MyLav in Italy and the rest of Europe. Veterinarians can request it through their usual laboratory channel.

The test detects genetic biomarkers of resistance to miltefosine, antimonials and allopurinol directly from clinical samples, with no parasite culture needed. It works on lymph node, peripheral blood, bone marrow, synovial fluid, skin biopsies and conjunctival swabs. In the validation study on 95 dogs, it showed 100% specificity and over 87.5% sensitivity.

The biomarkers come from our own Leishmania infantum genome cohorts from the Mediterranean area. LeishGenR™ was developed within a Neotec project supported by CDTI. We are now looking for reference laboratories in other endemic regions, such as Brazil, Latin America and the Middle East.
